Independent medical appraisal and revalidation support for doctors who do not have a Responsible Officer (RO) or designated body. Services are delivered remotely to UK and overseas doctors. Suitability screening applies. Final revalidation decisions remain with the GMC.

This page explains what is included, what is excluded, and how fees are structured. GP enquiries are accepted on a case by case basis. This service does not provide NHS contractual GP appraisal within NHS designated body appraisal schemes.

1) Independent annual appraisal

Suitable for doctors who need an annual appraisal outside NHS designated body appraisal schemes. The appraisal is structured and evidence led, aligned to professional standards and the doctor’s declared scope of practice.

  • Pre appraisal checklist and evidence mapping to scope of practice
  • Portfolio review and clarification of declarations

  • Written outputs including appraisal summary and PDP

2) Portfolio readiness review

A structured review to identify gaps, improve documentation quality, and prepare for appraisal or a revalidation submission. This is appropriate for doctors returning to practice, changing scope, or building evidence from multiple settings.

  • Evidence quality check and practical next steps
  • Written recommendations provided

3) Revalidation support for doctors without RO

Support for doctors who do not have a Responsible Officer or designated body and who require a clear pathway, structured documentation, and submission readiness planning. Where appropriate, Suitable Person oversight may be arranged.

  • Pathway planning based on circumstances and scope of practice

  • Timeline, checkpoints, and submission readiness review
  • Coordination of documents and declarations (administrative support)

Fee: from £1,200 per revalidation cycle (quoted after screening)

4) Ongoing support subscription

For doctors who prefer monthly support to maintain an organised portfolio and reduce last minute risk. This is commonly used by private practice and overseas based doctors.

  • Monthly check in (remote) and document triage
  • Portfolio tracking against declared scope of practice
  • Support for appraisal readiness and supporting information quality
  • Email support for practical questions (working days)

Fee: from £150 per month (minimum 6 months)

What is included and what is excluded

IMRAS focuses on professional appraisal and revalidation support. It does not provide statutory decision making or clinical care. This protects both parties and reduces misunderstanding.

  • Responsible Officer functions or statutory decision making roles

  • Medical treatment, clinical care, prescribing, or clinical second opinions
  • Coaching, mentoring, remediation, or performance management services
  • Advocacy in active GMC fitness to practise investigations

Frequently asked questions

Is this a Responsible Officer service?

No. IMRAS does not provide Responsible Officer functions or statutory decision making. Where appropriate, Suitable Person oversight may be arranged to support revalidation submissions. Final revalidation decisions remain with the GMC.
